As we are getting ready to approach a new year (and a new decade), there’s a lot of information about getting better results for every aspect of your life and career.

Most of this information discusses how to be a “new you” in the new year or how this new year is going to be “lit”.

The only way this upcoming new year is going to be on fire for you is if you’re willing to light a fire under your tush consistently, to make stuff happen. In other words, results happen because of our habits.

In my work as a business and breakthrough coach, it seems like a lot of people want the strategies on how to achieve a particular result. And, as much as I love strategies, if you are not willing to embrace habits (that support you) consistently, the act of achieving your goals will most likely fall short.

Instead of sharing a bunch of “habits” to implement, I’d rather give you a few ideas (and resources) to help form quality habits.

Here are three ideas to consider, as you work towards better results for your life or work. There is also a book recommendation for each of these ideas, so you can dive deeper into the concept, after listening to this episode.

Number one: Awareness

One of the biggest culprits that keeps people stuck is not going where they want to go. This leads to doing way too much versus focusing on the tasks that are truly going to move the needle.

Focus on making progress with one goal at a time. Once you decide what goal you are going to focus on, make a list of all the things you are currently doing to sabotage your progress.

For instance, if your goal is to be more healthy, what are the things you are doing right now that are getting you off track? Now, what is the opposite of those things that are derailing you? Do that instead!

Need a little more help with shifting your habits? Read Mel Robbin’s “Five Second Rule” book.

Number 2: Assessment

Getting better results in any area of your life or work takes time. You may have every intention of going “all in” on a new habit like, going to the gym every day or saving every penny. But, if you’ve rarely been to a gym before or spend every dime of your paycheck, you may find it tough to stay focused.

With that said, it’s important to do a fair assessment of what you can accomplish today, then tomorrow, then the next day and so on. You’ll gain more momentum when you can focus on achieving smaller wins.

Check out “The Compound Effect” by Darren Hardy. He shares so many examples of people who took smaller, daily action steps to get better results.

Number 3: Attitude

Our attitude towards getting better results can make or break our success. Do you have a limiting belief about your abilities? For example, for years, I always said, “I’m not athletic.” I had all sorts of evidence to prove it to…like
being benched during my school volleyball and basketball days.

Currently, my husband Ed and I are training for an IRONMAN competition. If you don’t know what Ironman is, it’s a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run. Anyone who trains for this IS, in fact, an athlete.

In order for me to embrace getting better results, I had to embrace I AM an athlete. And, I am doing things that athletes do, everyday…not just some days.

This whole belief around shifting my attitude towards my habits really became clear to me when I read the book “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. He talks about why it’s important to have clarity around your identity with your habits.

Once you have listened to the whole episode, be sure to share your most impactful take away in the comments of this post.
