Are you wanting to make a more of an impact with your goals than you currently are? Do you want to free up time by doing less “busy work”? If so, this episode is for you!
In this episode of the “Love the Work You Do” podcast, I’m going to share with you:
- What to avoid, as it relates to you accomplishing your goals
- Why is it important to be present with the impact you’re making today.
- A couple of examples of how people are making more of an impact while doing less
(If you haven’t done so already and listen to episode four how to prioritize your goals. Listen here.)
What to avoid, as it relates to you accomplishing your goals
The first thing to avoid: stop thinking about all the things you want to do and then try to do them all at the same time.
For example, if one of your goals is to speak about your brand to a national audience, focus on speaking to local audiences first.
You may also want to make a list of things that have to happen before you can even speak about your brand to local organizations (I dive deeper into giving you some ideas to think about, inside of the episode)
It’s important to remember that a “big impact” has to start somewhere. Be grateful for every step in the journey!
The second thing to avoid: making three, five, or ten-year goal projections.
These “long-term” goals projections are not an honest reflection of where you want to be in that time frame, anyway. The very most you could think about is what you want to project in the next year. I’m more confident in your ability to think about what you’re going to accomplish in the next 30, 60 or 90 days as it relates to you making an impact.
Ask yourself, “if I want to make a bigger impact than what I am currently doing, what do I need to do in the next 30 , 60 and 90 days to make that happen? What do I need to do in the next 60 days to make that happen?
And, when you super specific about these 30/60/90 day goals, I promise, you’re going to feel more connected to the journey of boosting your impact. It’s going to feel like it’s within reach and you can also course correct.
Why is it important to be present with the impact you’re making today
First reason: Going back to my personal brand example, if you try to speak about your brand on a national level, before you’ve even taken the time to speak about it on a local level, your presentation is going to seem a little disjointed.
Second reason: Many professionals I know want to meet new influencers or leaders who are making a big impact in their community. But, if they’re not taking the time to be present with their current network to foster those relationships to open up other doors, it will more challenging to scale the size of their network.
A couple of examples of people who started small but today are making a huge impact
First, I share the story about an insurance agent who currently works with nearly 100 professional athletes and entertainers throughout the nation and what he did to get this opportunity.
Second, I introduce you to a woman who was battling a severe form of depression but then in a matter of three years, she has cracked the code on her own battle with the disease and is now impacting tens of thousands of people with THE thing that helped her overcome her depression.
After you listen to these stories, ask yourself (and write down the answer to this question: “what’s the next thing I’ve got to do to get out of my current situation or challenge my way of thinking?”
Keep in mind, you don’t have to figure out how you’re going to make a bigger impact, by yourself. Leverage the conversations you have, the books you read or the podcasts you listen to, to glean best practices from other resources.
Bonus assignment: Replay this episode, at least one more time, and take notes on the stories you heard. Then, ask yourself, “how can I take what I learned in these stories and apply it to my world? I promise you, it will start giving you the creativity and insights as to what you’ve got to do to make the bigger impact without doing extra work to make stuff happen.
Final thought: You are exactly where you need to be right now. Move things along quicker means having some appreciation and gratitude for where you are today, plus, having the intention to take deliberate small action steps that are going increase your path towards loving the work that you do.
