In this episode, we have invited Ashley Brundage to share how to leverage your differences to impact change. She started her second career as a means of survival. Fighting discrimination, harassment, and homelessness, she found employment as a part-time associate then rose to national Vice President of Diversity & Inclusion in less than five years at a major financial services organization. Today, Ashely is an author, founder, and president of Empowering Differences.
Key Takeaways from my chat with Ashley:
- Ashley’s most curious about outside work: Ashley was most curious about uncovering new potential pain points that she knows to exist and helps others use them to improve their life.
- How Ashley makes an impact through her work and her inspiration: If you hold any privilege or access to something, you have to work to provide that empowerment for others. Ashley did about ten years’ worth of research on how empowerment was used differently based on the ten most common differences we hold as humans.
- Advice Ashley gives when faced with challenging situations: Having never gone to college was no longer her biggest difference that needed the most empowerment. Ashley is doing things that she can do to position her academic background now as a strength versus weakness.
- Ashley’s big impact: The best way to drive impact is to connect with the last step in this empowerment journey is taking action. Ashley outlined ten empowering actions to leverage change. Instead of using them as crutches or pigeonholing herself, she used them to leverage the impact for others.
- Book recommendation: Ashley recommends the book “How the World Sees You” and “How to Fascinate” by Sally Hogshead. These books transformed her thought process and how she went about creating a book. In order to truly comprehend what other people think about your perception, you must be open.
